| Windows 2000 Basics : Working with Programs Basic Text Input |
Page 1Basic text entry operations are the same in many programs. This tutorial will show how to enter text in Microsoft Wordpad . Page 5The WordPad window appears, displaying a new blank document. Page 6You can now start typing the text for your document. The text will start at the flashing insertion point. Page 7Here is a document with sample text which has been typed in. Page 9To deselect text, click outside the selected area and it will be deselected. Page 10To select a sentence or a paragraph, position the mouse of the first word you want to select. Drag the mouse until you have highlighted the words for selection. The text is highlighted. ("Dragging the mouse" means moving the mouse while keep the left mouse button pressed.) Page 11To select all the text in your document, press Ctrl+A on your keyboard and your whole document is selected. Page 12You can insert/add text anywhere in the document. Place the blinking cursor to the position where you want the text to appear. Then type in some text. Page 13Here we have typed in some new text at the insertion point indicated in the previous screenshot. Page 14You can also delete text that you do not want. Here we have deleted the text that was selected in the previous screenshot. To delete text, select the text and then press the Delete key. The text will be deleted. Page 15To move text to a new location, first select the text as shown. Then "drag" the text to a new location. (This means: hold down the left mouse key, and while holding the mouse key down, move the mouse cursor to a new location. Then, release the mouse key. Your text will be moved. This is called "drag and drop "). Page 19Place the text cursor where you want it to be copied. Then Click Edit > Paste from the pulldown menu. Page 21Here are some useful key combinations for text entry. For each combination, hold down the Ctrl key and simultaneously press the second key indicated. Ctrl - Z : Undo the last action Ctrl - X: Cut (See next tutorial, "The Clipboard") Ctrl - C: Copy Ctrl - V: Paste Ctrl - A: Select All Ctl - P: Print |
