Page 1

You can open an MS Word document that is located on an Internet site. One way is to do this with your browser. In this screenshot, Internet Explorer has been opened to a page that has a link to an MS Word document.

Click on the image for page view.

Here we've scrolled down the page to where there is a link to an MS Word document.

Click on the image for page view.

This opens the Word document in the browser, but the MS Word menubar now appears in the browser, so the browser has in effect turned into MS Word.

Click on the image for page view.

You can also open the same document directly in MS Word. Here we've opened MS Word.

Click on the image for page view.

Click on the Open icon.

Click on the image for page view.

Enter the URL of the document into the File Name text box. (The URL is the address that appears in the browser when you navigate to a page. We've simply copied this from the preceeding page.)

Click on the image for page view.

Click Open.

Click on the image for page view.

The document opens in MS Word. Notice that the document is now Read-Only. This is because the document is still located on the web server, not on your local machine. If you want to edit the document, you must save it to your machine.

Click on the image for page view.

Let's save the document to your machine so that you can edit it. Click on the Save  icon.

Click on the image for page view.

We are now looking at a copy of the document that is located on your machine's hard disk (in the My Documents folder), so it is no longer Read Only.
